The buildings
Suburban stock, now reaching an age
Most of Enfield was built between the wars and in the decades after, as the railways and the Great Cambridge Road pushed London outwards. The characteristic house is a semi-detached or short-terrace property with a hipped roof in clay or concrete tile, a front bay, and a garage or side access.
Those roofs are now eighty to a hundred years old. The tiles themselves are frequently still serviceable, but the things around them — the underfelt, the nails, the mortar bedding on the hips and ridges — are all at or past the end of their working life. That is the typical Enfield job: a sound covering on a tired roof. That is the typical job here, but it is far from the only one. Newer housing, flats, bungalows and outbuildings all need roofing too, and single repairs are just as welcome as a full re-roof.
- Hipped roofs stripped and re-covered
- Sound tiles salvaged and reused
- New membrane, battens and fixings
- Fascias and guttering renewed together
What goes wrong here
What we find on interwar roofs
The pattern is consistent enough that we can usually predict it before going up.
Perished underfelt
Original bitumen felt torn and sagging between rafters, no longer offering any secondary protection.
Hip and ridge mortar
Bedded hips and ridges with mortar cracked and washed out, letting tiles slip and water track in.
Corroded nails
Fixings rusted through, so tiles that are still perfectly sound have nothing holding them in place.
Rotten fascias
Timber fascias and soffits softened behind a leaking gutter, taking the rafter feet with them.
Hip valleys
The valleys where a rear addition meets the main hipped roof, a very common leak point on these houses.
Garage and porch roofs
Flat coverings over attached garages and porches, usually the oldest and least maintained part of the property.
Working in Enfield
The easiest access on our patch
Suburban layouts give us space to work, which keeps a job running smoothly from start to finish.
- Driveways and front gardens for scaffold and material
- Side access to rear roofs without going through the house
- Largely unrestricted parking, so fewer permits needed
- Semi-detached layouts allowing scaffold on your own land
- Simple hipped roof geometry with fewer junctions
- Detached garages and outbuildings often needing work too
- Mature suburban trees filling gutters each autumn
Straightforward access means we can get set up quickly and work tidily. Everything is set out in an itemised written quotation before we start.

Customer reviews
What our customers actually say
Every review below was left by a real customer on one of our public profiles. Nothing has been edited.
My roof had various areas needing repair and adjustments to fascia, guttering and gable end to avoid future leaks. I found Patrick and his team to be capable, professional and knowledgeable. Always easy to reach by phone, message and email, they turned up when they said they would and finished the job to my satisfaction. I would recommend them to anyone looking for a good job.
Excellent experience with Patrick and his team from Invigorate Roofing. Patrick arrived on time, identified all the issues, offered a very fair and reasonable price, and completed the job quickly and professionally. His workmanship was great, and everything was done without delays. His team was polite, respectful, and very friendly throughout the whole process. I highly recommend them for any roofing work or repairs.
Patrick was very helpful indeed — he diagnosed the issue we have had with a persistently leaking roof and suggested the solution. He was really good at explaining what the issue was likely to be, and when he and his team opened up the tiling, he was able to fix it. Professional, good with communication, completed the work in one day and went back to check it had all settled in. Would highly recommend him.
The team at Invigorate Roofing did an incredible job. The price was great, the work they did was to a high standard, and they tidied up before they left — incredibly professional all round.
Patrick and his team at Invigorate Roofing were fantastic! They worked on our property over two full days repairing multiple leaks. Their professionalism from start to finish was 1st class with regular updates and images through keeping us in the loop. I would highly recommend Invigorate Roofing! Five stars!
Out of 3 quotes, Invigorate was by far the most competitive and the most transparent. Patrick carried out the job swiftly and thoroughly (and spotlessly). I would thoroughly recommend using Patrick.

Enfield FAQs
Roofing in Enfield, answered
Questions we get asked about working on EN1, EN2, EN3 properties. If yours is not here, just ask.
My tiles look fine but the roof leaks. Why?
On an interwar roof, almost always the felt and fixings rather than the tiles. Tiles shed the bulk of the water; the felt beneath catches what gets past. When that felt has perished — normal at this age — anything driven past a tile goes straight into the loft.
Can you reuse my existing tiles in a re-roof?
Usually yes, if they are sound. We strip carefully, set the good tiles aside, renew the membrane, battens and fixings underneath, then re-lay. You should expect some breakage and allow for a percentage of matched replacements.
Should the fascias and gutters be done at the same time?
It is usually the sensible moment. The gutter has to come off to renew a fascia, and the scaffold is already up, so doing both together avoids paying twice for access. We will tell you if your existing boards are still sound enough to leave.
Is Enfield within your normal area?
Yes. It sits comfortably within the area we cover from Hampstead, and we are there regularly.
