The buildings
Terraces built for the railway, roofed behind parapets
Archway filled in rapidly in the second half of the nineteenth century as the railways arrived, and it was built the way speculative London was built then: long terraces, slate roofs, and a parapet at the front to give the street a tidy line.
Behind that parapet, most of these houses have a butterfly roof — two slopes falling inwards to a central valley gutter running front to back. It is an efficient way to roof a narrow terrace and a permanent liability, because the whole thing drains through one hidden gutter that nobody can see and very few people ever clear. Not every house here has a butterfly roof, and not every job is a valley re-line. We work on the standard pitched roofs, the post-war housing and the newer builds too, and on the small repairs that just need doing properly.
- Central valley gutters re-lined in lead
- Slate slopes repaired or re-covered
- Parapet and coping joints made good
- Rear extension roofs tied in properly
What goes wrong here
Butterfly roofs, and what they do
If you live in an Archway terrace, there is a good chance your roof problem is on this list.
Central valley failure
The hidden gutter between the two slopes, with split lead or a failed lining and no easy way to inspect it.
Blocked valley outlets
A single outlet at one end taking the whole roof, blocked with leaves and slate debris until it backs up.
Nail sickness
Original slate falling because the fixings have corroded, not because the slate itself has worn out.
Parapet copings
Open joints in the front parapet coping, taking water down the inside face of the wall.
Rear addition roofs
The back extension roof, usually flat, usually later, and usually the first thing to fail on the building.
Party wall stacks
Shared chimney stacks on the party wall, where the damp appears in one house and the cause sits over the boundary.
Working in Archway
Terraces, hills and shared boundaries
Terraced housing on a slope brings its own access and neighbour considerations.
- Terraced access, often needing agreement with a neighbour
- Steep streets that limit where scaffold can be loaded
- Controlled parking with permits needed for scaffold
- Shared party wall stacks and valleys
- Many houses converted into flats with separate owners
- Rear roofs reachable only through a garden or a ground-floor flat
- Hillside gardens making rear access physically awkward
Where a job involves a shared valley or a party wall stack we will say so early, because agreeing it with a neighbour up front is far easier than halfway through.

Customer reviews
What our customers actually say
Every review below was left by a real customer on one of our public profiles. Nothing has been edited.
My roof had various areas needing repair and adjustments to fascia, guttering and gable end to avoid future leaks. I found Patrick and his team to be capable, professional and knowledgeable. Always easy to reach by phone, message and email, they turned up when they said they would and finished the job to my satisfaction. I would recommend them to anyone looking for a good job.
Excellent experience with Patrick and his team from Invigorate Roofing. Patrick arrived on time, identified all the issues, offered a very fair and reasonable price, and completed the job quickly and professionally. His workmanship was great, and everything was done without delays. His team was polite, respectful, and very friendly throughout the whole process. I highly recommend them for any roofing work or repairs.
Patrick was very helpful indeed — he diagnosed the issue we have had with a persistently leaking roof and suggested the solution. He was really good at explaining what the issue was likely to be, and when he and his team opened up the tiling, he was able to fix it. Professional, good with communication, completed the work in one day and went back to check it had all settled in. Would highly recommend him.
The team at Invigorate Roofing did an incredible job. The price was great, the work they did was to a high standard, and they tidied up before they left — incredibly professional all round.
Patrick and his team at Invigorate Roofing were fantastic! They worked on our property over two full days repairing multiple leaks. Their professionalism from start to finish was 1st class with regular updates and images through keeping us in the loop. I would highly recommend Invigorate Roofing! Five stars!
Out of 3 quotes, Invigorate was by far the most competitive and the most transparent. Patrick carried out the job swiftly and thoroughly (and spotlessly). I would thoroughly recommend using Patrick.

Archway FAQs
Roofing in Archway, answered
Questions we get asked about working on N19 properties. If yours is not here, just ask.
What is a butterfly roof and why does mine leak?
It is the M-shaped roof common on Victorian terraces — two slopes falling inwards to a central valley gutter hidden behind the front parapet. The whole roof drains through that one gutter, so when its lining splits or its outlet blocks, water goes into the building rather than out of it.
Can a butterfly roof valley be repaired, or does it need replacing?
Both are common. An isolated split in otherwise sound lead can be welded. Where the lining has been laid in over-long runs, has multiple splits, or the timber below has gone soft, re-lining the valley properly is the repair that actually lasts.
My neighbour and I share a chimney stack. Who fixes it?
A stack on a party wall is generally a shared responsibility, and the practical answer is usually a shared job. We are happy to inspect and quote in a way both households can see, which tends to make that conversation much easier.
How do you reach the rear roof on a terraced house?
Usually with scaffold to the rear, which means access through the property or the garden and sometimes a neighbour`s. We work that out at the quoting stage rather than turning up and discovering it.
